Joseph D. Hampton

Joe Hampton is an attorney with Betts Patterson Mines, and is a member of the Insurance Coverage Practice Group.  His practice consists primarily of counseling and representing insurance carriers in coverage and extra-contractual matters, in states throughout the Pacific Northwest.  Mr. Hampton’s experience includes analysis, advising, trials and appeals on a wide variety of insurance coverages and issues.

Representative Cases

·         Successfully defended through jury verdict case against a condominium insurer, sued after a total fire loss, for insufficiency of coverage limits.

·         Successfully defended through jury verdict case against a condominium insurer, sued for coverage for long-developing water damage.

·         Obtained pre-trial dismissal of coverage and bad faith case brought by insured against homeowners’ insurer, by demonstrating that insured had committed fraud through counterfeiting claim documents.

·         Successfully defended through jury verdict bad faith lawsuit against insurer arising out of suspicious claim and arson fire.

·         Obtained summary dismissal of coverage and bad faith lawsuit brought by woman who sought insurance coverage for a claim and lawsuit against her for molesting a minor boy, and successfully defended the appeal.

·         Successfully defended through bench trial case against insurer for alleged bad faith in investigating a suspicious automobile loss.

·         Successfully defended bad faith lawsuit against insurer in action to collect on $18 million confessed judgment; case was eventually settled for $65,000.

  • Mr. Hampton has spoken at and chaired the annual Washington Defense Trial Lawyer Insurance Law Seminar, and delivered presentations to Northwest Insurance Claims Association and the Washington Appellate Judges' Conference.  He is available to provide in-house presentations on insurance law topics, to insurance carriers, brokerages and third-party administrators.
